Before serving as The United States Ambassador to Russia in 2012-2014, Michael McFaul, Ph.D. worked at the National Security Council as Special Assistant to President Barack Obama. When he completed his service as ambassador, McFaul returned to Stanfard University as a professor of political science and a senior advisor at the Hoover Institute. 

McFaul has written several books, the most recent of which are: Russia's Unfinished Revolution: Political Change from Gorbachev to Putin (2015) and From Cold War to Hot Peace: An American Ambassador in Putin's Russia (2018).

McFaul and his wife, Donna Norton, married in 1993 and have two sons, Cole and Luke.
